Why Quilt? "for the purpose of bringing color and beauty into their lives as well as keeping their bodies warm". - Sylvia Sherertz (The Art of the Quilt)

"Quilts often tell stories, if not by the blocks made then by the stories handed down from mother to daughter, from grandmother to grandchild about those who inspired the quilts or where the tiny calico print or rough homespun square of material came from". - Lady Macbeth (on egruve.com)

English paper piecing is the greatest quilting method for people on the go who can’t or don’t want to be tied to a machine.

Step 1:   You need to cut your fabric a minimum of 1/4” larger than the shape of your paper.  This can be done by marking, using a template, or just randomly cutting around your paper shape.

Step 2:   Pin your fabric to your paper.  Fold the edges of the fabric over the paper and baste through the fabric and paper.  I use a knot and always start on the top of my piece, but there are no rules, just experiment and find the method that works best for you.  Preference is to use a quilting thread as it tangles and frays less than regular thread.

Step 3:   From the back side whip stitch your pieces together using approximately eight stitches per inch.  Once you have stitched all the way around your piece you may remove your basting and take out the paper
